Work?

As an alternative to university sooner or later you’re going to have to work. There’s no other way.

Good interview techniques.

Be as honest as you can be. But remember you want to work, not because you dropped out or didn’t get the grades you hoped for. Your alternative to university is work because you want to work.

How should you dress? What should you wear at work?

Remember, when in Rome do as the Romans. If everyone else dresses in shiny black shoes and a white shirt, you should do to. Don’t wear trainers (unless told to do so). Don’t wear jeans (unless told to do so).

Have a look at their website, is everyone in a suit? Then you should be too. If you’re unsure, dress smart. White shirt, tie, work shoes, black trousers. You can always take the tie off, but for work you need to look like you mean business. Remember, no employer ever complained the new employee dressed too smart.

Unhappy? Should you stay in the current job?

Some questions to ask yourself when considering whether to stay or move on.

Are people being promoted from with the firm?

To tell, find out if managers are former office workers. If staff are being promoted, that’s a good reason to stay. Work hard, and you could do well. If no, maybe time to move on.

If staff are constantly leaving due to illness or mistreatment, bear in mind if you stick it out you could easily be a manager in a few years.

Are co-workers happy? If generally not, maybe time to move on.

Do you enjoy your job? Obvious, but worth considering.

How do you rank your wage? Does it go up, or do alternative employers pay more.

What other options are there for you to do with your skills, interests and qualifications?
